Men’s Shed Portfolio

Pacific New Media Contemporary Photography in Hawaii 2020 – Official Selection
Recipient of the Hana Hou! Magazine Portfolio Award

This series of photographs was compiled from weekly visits over a two-year period to a non-descript warehouse on Pier 19 in Honolulu where a group of mostly older men regularly can come together to share their knowledge and skills, working shoulder-to-shoulder in the company of their peers on personal projects of all types.

Founded in Australia, and now a world-wide movement, the not-for-profit Men’s Shed provides a chance for men to gather in a purposeful way and counteract the effects of loneliness, which is linked to men’s especially early mortality.

My goal was not only to make portraits of the men but also what they were working on to convey a sense of who they are in context and how these individuals, who have since become my friends, are redefining masculinity and creating community.

The award-winning portfolio can also be seen at Pacific New Media.
